Creative Chic's Movie Pick

As Good As It Gets is one of my favorite movies .

"Amazon.comFor all of its conventional plotting about an obsessive-compulsive curmudgeon (Jack Nicholson) who improves his personality at the urging of his gay neighbor (Greg Kinnear) and a waitress (Helen Hunt) who inspires his best behavior, this is one of the sharpest Hollywood comedies of the 1990s. Nicholson could play his role in his sleep (the Oscar he won should have gone to Robert Duvall for The Apostle), but his mischievous persona is precisely necessary to give heart to his seemingly heartless character, who is of all things a successful romance novelist. As a single mom with a chronically asthmatic young son, Hunt gives the film its conscience and integrity (along with plenty of wry humor), and she also won an Oscar for her wonderful performance. Greg Kinnear had to settle for an Oscar nomination (while cowriter-director James L. Brooks was inexplicably snubbed by Oscar that year), but his work was also singled out in the film's near-unanimous chorus of critical praise. It's questionable whether a romance between Hunt and the much older Nicholson is entirely believable, but this movie's smart enough--and charmingly funny enough--to make it seem endearingly possible. --Jeff Shannon a'
Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 09/20/2005 Starring: Jack Nicholson Greg Kinnear Run time: 139 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: James L. Brooks

I watch it at times on my days off. Very Funny Movie.

Challenge to Read More

So this is April 1st, 2009, I made a challenge to myself to read a book every two weeks..........

The books can be any fiction genre, though I love cozy mysteries I am going to challenge myself to read any fiction genre overy the next year.

I know you say why limit yourself to fiction? Well fiction is my escape from the tedious day to day routines. I know you can relate to that!

My first book is a mystery:

"Smoke Screen" by Marianne Macdonald

Since I love antiquarian books and antiques and cozy mysteries, I chose this and it's one I had purchased sometime ago at a library sale but never got around to reading it.

from book cover about book:

"When her Majesty offers Dido Hoare, London's most intrepid antiquarian bookseller, the opportunity to buy her personal library in Oxford, Dido cannot believe her good fortune. It turns out to be her last bit of good luck for some time.

"Her Majesty" is in fact the aged and rather daunting Clare Templeton Forbes, ex-lover of the famous American modernist poet Orrin Forbes. Dido doesn't understand Clare's rush to sell the books, but she knows her shop could profit nicely from them, so she goes ahead with the deal. It's then that the trouble begins.....

from book cover about the author:

"Marianne Macdonald was born in Canada and lived there until she was twenty, when she went to Oxford to do graduate work. She has lived in England ever since, pursuing an academic career until her retirement to concentrate on writing and acting. "Smoke Screen" is her third mystery featuring the adventures of antiquarian bookseller Dido."

Beat Stress with Stress-Fighting Healthy Comfort Foods

We as Americans have been experiencing high levels of stress. With the Bad Economy, Foreclosures, Unemployment, Layoffs, Rising Healthcare Costs we are all experiencing stress!

Stress is defined as: Your body's way of dealing with a perceived threat, by raising blood pressure, speeding up breathing and heart rat, making the liver turn blood sugar into energy, and diverting blood from internal organs toward muscles.

Stress is a major cause of fatigue, a lower immunity, and as stated before a raise of blood pressure, making it a risk factor for many problems, including infections, constipation, sexual dysfunction, depression, and heart disease.

Even though times are rough we should not resort to eating unhealthy junk food to sooth that uncomfortable feeling.

The following foods can soothe those jangled nerves by evoking feelings of comfort and security:

  • Soup
  • Whole-Grain Toast
  • Yogurt
  • Herbal Teas: ginseng, chamomile
  • Apples, Oranges, Strawberries
  • Eggs
  • Fresh vegetables: asparagus, brussels sprouts, broccoli
  • Lean Meats
  • Low- or Nonfat dairy products
  • Whole-grain breads

With the rising cost of health care this "Creative Chic Gal" will be striving to eat healthier !

Check back for some creative, healthy recipes!

Creative Writing Creative Living

I keep a journal of all my spontaneous thoughts so that when I get a chance I can put these thoughts into writing. It is a way that I both collect ideas and get extensive writing practice.

Journaling for me is used:

  • for enjoyment

  • to free my imagination

  • to help clear my mind

  • for developing a creative discipline

Some thoughts:

"We are always afraid to start something that we want to make very good, true and serious."-Brenda Ueland.

This is so true of myself I feel that my writing is not good enough so I don't do it, I tend to take the coward's way out by just giving up and blaming it on not enough experience, not good with words etc., etc., etc. So I will write even if it doesn't make sense sometimes.

I've made a commitment Today to increase my vocabulary by 1000 words this year, thus making it easier to write.

"Word Mastery Made Simple" was a set of "Self-Help Encyclopedia" that my father bought back in the 1960's for our family to study while in school.

My vocabulary word to learn today is: ambiguous.

On a rainy dreary day we ate English Muffins with strawberry jelly slathered on them. Quite a switch from yesterday's beautiful weather which was sunny and 75 degrees. I later watched a movie with my husband "Grand Canyon" and "L. A. Story" , two movies with Steve Martin. My husband frequently uses a theme in his movie viewing i. e. "Steve Martin" movies.
